Wilko and Waitrose opening stores in Hastings? Here are the stores you would like to see
It seems that whenever a large vacant unit becomes available, rumors spread that a large chain has it in sight.
More recently, it has been suggested that the old Peacocks store in Queens Road could be the site of a new Wilko or Waitrose.
Many readers have shared their hopes for this to be true on our Facebook page.
The Observer contacted stores this week to see if they plan to open in Hastings.
Unfortunately, the news was not good for buyers.
A spokesperson for Wilko said: “At the moment we have no plans to open a Wilko store in Hastings. Customers can shop with wilko at nearby Eastbourne stores or online at wilko.com.
Waitrose has also confirmed that it has no plan for the site.
We asked you what you would like to see in the empty site.
Our Facebook friends responded.
TGI’s, Harvester, Home Bargains, The Range, Farm Foods, Footlocker, and a Nike store were among the suggestions.
Emma Hepburn said: “Personally, I don’t think Waitrose is suitable for this particular location, while I’m sure there are many who are lucky enough to shop in Waitrose, I also know there are has a huge demographic of people in the locality who definitely wouldn’t! ”
Rosslyn Chisholm: “You just have to turn it into better affordable housing than being empty for the next 5 years. “
Nicholas Robus added, “How about supporting local family businesses rather than the big chains that take money out of town?
Betty Betts said: “I thought it was going to house a number of different stores. I wish Woolworths would come back. I think Iceland needs a bigger store as it is difficult to maneuver with a stroller or disabled scooter around the existing one. A John Lewis store would be nice too.
Dawn Ann Langan asked “What about decent clothing stores? There is nothing left except Primark.
However, John Griffin said, “Why would one of the department stores want to open downtown? Parking is too expensive, so why would you pay to park when you can shop at out of town stores?
What would you like to see move into that empty store?
