Wichita State Announces 2022 Calendar
WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State Softball Head Coach Kristi bredbenner unveiled his team’s spring 2022 program on Tuesday morning.
Bredbenner is entering his 11th season at the helm of the softball program, after arguably the best season in program history in 2021. Wichita State returns its first All-American in school history in Sydney McKinney, as well as position starters Addison barnard and Neleigh’s herring; as well as pitchers Erin mcdonald and Caitlin bingham.
There will be big shoes to fill, having lost Bailey Lange, Ryleigh buck, Madison Perrigan, Kaylee huecker and Bailee Nickerson upon graduation. All were multi-year starters and names strewn across the record books.
The Shockers will take part in five early-season tournaments, including the Bearkat Classic (February 11-13), Razorback Invitational (February 17-19), Niner Invitational (February 25-27), Jayhawk Invitational (March 11-13) and OSU Mizuno Classic (March 18-19).
Wichita State will face seven teams (Arkansas, Minnesota, Oklahoma State, South Florida, South Dakota State, UCF) that competed in the 2021 NCAA Softball Tournament, including reigning national champion Oklahoma on the 29th. March to Norman.
The game begins at the Bearkat Classic in Huntsville, TX, with games against Dayton, Sam Houston State, South Dakota and Houston Baptist. The following weekend, Wichita State travels to Fayetteville, Ark., For the Razorback Invitational. There, the Shockers will see Arkansas, Illinois, Longwood and western Illinois.
Wichita State will get a taste of future American opponent Charlotte when the Shockers take part in the Niner Invitational in Charlotte, NC. Joining the Niners and Shockers will be a familiar foe in northern Iowa and Minnesota.
Between the Niner Invitational and the Jayhawk Invitational, the Shockers travel to Lincoln, New Brunswick to face Nebraska and the State of South Dakota. Wichita State will face both teams twice.
The tournament will be completed by the Jayhawk Invitational against Southeast Missouri State, Kansas, Missouri State and Iowa; and OSU Mizuno Classic featuring the Cowgirls and Kansas City, competing in the 2021 University World Series.
The 2022 home opener will be an in-state battle against Kansas on March 23 at 6 p.m. ET.
Midweek clashes will see the Shockers take on Missouri State, Omaha, Oklahoma and Kansas City on the road; and home competitions with Kansas and the state of Oklahoma (April 6).
The Shockers begin their quest to repeat themselves as champions of the American Athletic Conference, April 1-3 when they host Tulsa at Wilkins Stadium. Memphis (April 22-24) and UCF (May 6-8) will also visit Wilkins Stadium for a series of conference weekends in 2022.
Wichita State’s three road series in the American game include: South Florida (April 8-10), Houston (April 14-16) and East Carolina (April 29-May 1).
The 2022 American Athletic Conference Championship will be hosted by East Carolina in Greenville, NC, May 12-14.
