‘Mile in their Shoes’ event on Saturday will support victims of domestic violence and raise awareness
STATEN ISLAND, NY — District Attorney Michael E. McMahon is asking Staten Islanders to consider walking a mile in the shoes of victims of domestic violence at an event Saturday in Bulls Head.
McMahon’s Office, the NYPD, and the Mayor’s Office to End Gender-Based Violence are hosting the “Mile in Their Shoes” Domestic Violence Awareness Walk and Family Day in Willowbrook Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event was originally scheduled to take place on October 2, but was postponed due to bad weather over the weekend.
Guests will come together to empower survivors of domestic and intimate partner violence and promote healthy family relationships. Attendees will be able to hear testimonies from survivors themselves, memorialize loved ones who have been lost to violence, and take a stand that domestic violence has no place in the borough.
According to McMahon’s office, about 50% of reported criminal assaults on Staten Island involve domestic and spousal violence. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Attendees are requested to use the Richmond Avenue and Eaton Place entrance.
This event is free and open to the public and will include guest speakers, a wall of remembrance and empowerment, a wellness station, comfort animals, music, family activities such as yoga and meditation , face paint, carousel rides, an NYPD rock wall, a bouncy house, ice cream and more, according to the prosecutor’s office.
A number of local domestic violence service providers will have tables set up to offer information about the resources and support they offer, including counselling, conflict resolution, housing needs, legal services, child care and career development.
The DA’s office will also collect travel-sized personal hygiene items and beauty products to create “emergency survival kits” for victims.
Residents are encouraged to pre-register to receive a #DVAM2022 t-shirt and shopping bag.
