Kayali Vanilla 28 is the most popular vanilla flavor in the world
I’m on an unofficial and totally absurd mission to get all my friends to have the same signature scent: Kayali Vanilla 28. Please note that I am in no way a fragrance influencer. Many of my friends are real perfume aficionados, while I don’t know the oud of amber. I simply recognize a delicious scent when I smell one.
Whenever I hang out with my friends, they inevitably ask me what I’m wearing. My answer is always “Kayali Vanille… the same perfume I was wearing the last time I saw you. Eventually I get texts saying, “OK, I’m fully converted to Kayali Vanilla now.”
But my friends and I aren’t the only ones who can’t get enough of Kayali Vanilla 28. The eau de parfum, which was brought to life by Mona Kattan, is buzzing on social media. (For those unfamiliar, she’s the co-founder and global president of not only Kayali, but also her sister’s namesake brand, Huda Beauty.) In fact, Kayali’s Instagram is awash with comments like, ” I don’t want to wear anything else.” and “I just ordered my fifth bottle.” Dozens also share their complaints about selling Kayali Vanilla 28 worldwide. Kayali has even taken note of the request and has just launched a limited edition set for the perfume.
What praises juice, as Kattan delightfully calls it, so beloved by fragrance novices and experts alike, however? Allow me to dive into the intricacies and simplicity of Kayali Vanilla 28 that make it so universally appealing.
The origins of Kayali vanilla 28
Only the best vanilla flavor on the market could be created by a verified vanilla enthusiast. “If I had to pick one note I liked the most, it might be vanilla,” Kattan told me during a conversation we had in Dubai in December 2019.
The rest of Kayali’s range is proof of that. Vanilla is also a note in Utopia Vanilla Coco 21, Deja Vu White Flower 57 and Sweet Diamond Pink Pepper 25. However, Kayali Vanilla 28 came first as part of Mona Kattan’s debut in the world of fragrances, alongside two other note-focused fragrances: Citrus 08 and Musk 12.
Before hitting the market, Kayali Vanilla 28 took 28 iterations – hence the number of its name – to master with the help of Swiss perfumery Firmenich. This company is also behind the equally adored perfumes Marc Jacobs Daisy, Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium, By Killian Good Girl Gone Bad, Diptique Eau de Minthé and Gucci Bloom.
True to its name, Kayali Vanilla is an unabashed vanilla scent, says Sable Yong, who is not only one of my dear friends but also a beauty writer and the co-founder of the fragrance-focused podcast Smell Ya Later. Although “the broader mainstream interpretation tends to associate vanilla flavors with dessert sweetness, Kayali’s version doesn’t add so much sweetness as it adds more vanilla,” she said. told TZR.
Creamy vanilla vibes are brought to you by a blend of vanilla orchids from Madagascar and tonka to Brazil. According to Tynan Sinks, the other co-host of Smell Ya Later and winner of the 2019 Fragrance Foundation Award for Editorial of the Year – Digital, the latter “has an understated sweetness, as well as a nutty spiciness.” .
Vanilla orchid, on the other hand, is the flower from which vanilla pods are harvested – they are actually seed pods picked from vanilla orchid vines. With that in mind, Kayali Vanilla has a true vanilla extract quality that is “warm, strong, and boozy,” Sinks told TZR. Then, the sweetness of Kayali Vanilla is boosted by brown sugar. This confectionery ingredient adds a rich caramelization to the scent, Sinks notes.
Layers of musk, patchouli and amber woods also add smoky depth to the juice, while the florals keep it from being seemingly cavities-inducing just by inhaling it. These extra notes help balance the yin and yang of Kayali Vanilla 28, says Fiona Co Chan, the founder of popular makeup line TikTok Youthforia. “The jasmine notes are seductive and feminine, while the earthiness is very strong and bold,” she told TZR. “Vanilla is one of the notes that plays perfectly between the floral and the earthy.”
Overall, Kayali Vanilla 28 “pulls in everything that pairs well with the note — spice, floral, and wood — but grounds it all in real raw vanilla,” Sinks says. “It’s both a literal view of vanilla and an artistic expression of it. It is both the truth and the daydream. It is a fact and a fantasy.
The nostalgia factor of Kayali Vanilla 28
Whenever my mom took me to the mall when I was little, she always had to stop at Sephora. As she browsed through the latest skincare launches, I went straight to the shelf of Pink Sugar. Something about it was boldly feminine, decidedly sweet, and perfectly playful — everything I yearned for when I was an 11-year-old stuck in South Florida. My mom never let me sink my teeth into an entire bottle of retro cotton candy perfume, so I chased that Pink Sugar high until I started using Kayali Vanilla 28 in 2020. It represents the woman I am now: comforting, creative, and sweet with a kick.
I discussed this theory with Saphran Eckersley of the popular TikTok account @Perfumerella, and she agrees that Kayali Vanilla is like an adult version of Pink Sugar. Although he grew up in Australia, Eckersley coincidentally liked to wear Pink Sugar in college and later discovered Kayali Vanilla during a trip to Sephora a few years ago.
Fans of the scent also remember the comfort of Warm Vanilla Sugar by Bath & Body Works when wearing Kayali Vanilla. Think of it as a luxurious, more indulgent alternative to retro gourmet fragrance. “Warm Vanilla Brown Sugar body spray worked so Kayali Vanilla could run,” jokes my friend Amber aka tarot card reader and spiritual healer Amber the Alchemist. “While soft, he’s in layers, so he doesn’t feel juvenile.” These qualities are essential for someone who must perpetually smell the edible, the warm and the sensual “at the same time”, she adds.
Kayali Vanilla also has a wonderful way of reminding people of their loved ones. “The first time I experienced Kayali Vanilla, it enveloped me like a warm embrace,” makeup artist Rose Siard says, while Eckersley tells me it reminds her of everything her “Nanna ” did growing up.
In other words, “Kayali’s Vanilla takes the familiar uplifting gourmet scent and lets it grow, so those who loved the scent in their youth can grow with it,” adds Yong.

The Pairing Potential of Vanilla Kayali 28
Kayali Vanilla 28 connoisseurs often attest to its versatility. In the words of another comment I spotted on Instagram, “Vanilla 28 elevates all.” The note might even be considered one of the easiest scents to layer.
Kattan, who is the queen of layering scents, likens Vanilla 28 to whipped cream. “You should put it on everything,” she says. “It’s like the best topper. On top of any scent, it just adds such a nice touch to this one. Her favorite pairings for Kayali Vanilla are Love, Don’t Be Shy by Killian, Sì Passione by Giorgio Armani and Louis Vuitton Ombre Nomade, to name a few.
My favorite Kayali Vanilla 28 sidekicks are Tom Ford’s Bitter Peach for a sumptuous peaches and cream vibe. I also like to layer it with YSL’s new Black Opium Illicit Green when I want a more acidic fruitiness and Ellis Brooklyn’s Super Amber to amp up the amber elements.
A TikTok hack I spotted also involves layering it over a vanilla-scented lotion, like Nivea Vanilla Almond Oil Infused Body Lotion or Amber Vanilla Soufflé Body Cream. by Laura Mercier, to help the fragrance stay on your skin longer. However, Eckersley swears by Kayali Vanilla’s longevity, and Yong alone attests to its strength, so feel free to spray it directly onto bare skin solo in all its divinely smooth glory.
