How music and scents help Shweta Tripathi-Sharma get into character
With a variety of roles in TV, film and now on OTT platforms, in a career spanning just over a decade, you’d think Shweta Tripathi Sharma would have a checklist that would help her choose your next project.
“I’m still a gut-driven person. What I mean is that when I read the script, I want to know if I can do the role justice and if I’m interested in reading the script myself,” says Tripathi.
Whether it’s his character in the recently released black comedy/thriller web series “Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhen”, or Golu Gupta from the detective web series “Mirzapur” or Shaloo from the national award-winning film “Masaan”, this is the emotional journey of the character that most “excites” the 36-year-old actress, who has a rather singular approach to putting herself in the shoes of her characters.
“If I understand my character’s emotional journey, then everything falls into place, automatically. For example, for Shikha, her priority is love. Yes, it gets her in trouble, but just like hope, love is a very strong and powerful emotion, which in her case is her driving force. So I understood,” she says.
For her music and her scent are two things, she kind of uses them to define her characters in different projects.
“Music is magic. Each character of mine has a very different playlist. With fragrance, some characters are fruity, floral, fresh, some are woody. As Shikha is very delicate, very fragile, its fragrance is similar to that of a flower “Golu, on the other hand, has a strong fragrance, and that was in the second season. It was something else in the first season. In ‘Masaan’ for Shaloo, I paired Shaloo’s character with Mogra’s scent, because I needed a very desi, soft, sweet scent for her,” adds Sharma.
They also help Shweta Tripathi-Sharma add more layers to her character, which becomes important especially in cases of web series, which last a few seasons. “When I shot the first season of ‘Mirzapur’, I was a different person then. I’m a different person now. So that’s where the scent, and especially the playlist comes in handy because it helps me to get back into the character. I keep constantly adding and subtracting from the playlist,” she concludes.
